（著者紹介）

ナサニエル・ホーソーン (Nathaniel Hawthorne, 1804-1864)　マサチューセッツ州セイレム生まれの小説家。ボストンやセイレムの税関に勤務。イギリス・リヴァプールの領事を務めた経歴がある。『語り古した物語』( Twice-Told Tales, 1837)、『緋文字』(The Scarlet Letter, 1850)、『七破風の家』(The House of the Seven Gables, 1851)等の作品がある。『デヴィッド・スワン』(David Swan)は『語り古した物語』の中に収録されている。
