０６２　「愛」

The stage is more beholding to love than the life of man.  For as to the stage, love is ever matter of comedies and now and then of tragediges; but in life it cloth much

mischief, sometimes like a siren, sometimes like a fury.  You may observe that amongst all the great and worthy persons (whereof the memory remaineth, either ancient, or recent) there is not one that hath been transported to the mad degree of love; which shows that great spirits and great business do keep out this weak passion.

behold「じっくり見る」、as to「〜については」、matter「材料」、now and then「時々」、

cloth = clothe「すっかりおおう」、mischief「不幸」、siren「誘惑の女神」、remaineth＝remain、business「事業」、doは強調を表す。

芝居の舞台は人生よりも一層多く恋愛に負うている。恋愛は舞台に於いて常に喜劇の材料となり、又時々悲劇の材料となる。しかしこれは人生の於いては多くの禍害をなすものである。時には誘惑の女神として、時には復讐の女神として。惟うに古代にまれ近代にまれ、

その伝の今日まで伝わっている偉大にして価値ある人物のうち、狂気じみる程度まで恋愛に没頭した者は一人も居ない。この一事は、偉大な心情と偉大な事業はこの弱々しい感情

フランシス・ベーコン（Francis Bacon, Baron Verulan and Viscount St. Albans, 1561-1626）イングランド近世のキリスト教神学者、哲学者、法律家。シェイクスピアと同時代人であり、シェイクスピアはベーコンのペンネームだという説を唱える人もいる。
