０５９　生活と本質

 

Now, comrades, what is the nature of this life of ours?  Let us face it, our lives are miserable, laborious and short.  We are born, we are given just so much food as will keep the breath in our bodies, and those of us who are capable of it are forced to work to the last atom of our strength; and the very instant that our usefulness has come to an end we are slaughtered with hideous cruelty.  No animal in England knows the meaning of happiness or leisure after he is a year old.  No animal in England is free. The life of an animal is misery and slavery: that is the plain truth.

さて、同志諸君、我々のこの生活の本質とは何でしょうか？この問題にしっかりと向き合おうではありませんか。我々の生活は悲惨であり、困難であり、短いものです。我々は生まれると、身体がようやく息をし続けられるだけの食物を与えられ、息のできる者は力の最後の微粒子が尽きるまで働かされます。そして、役に立たなくなると、一瞬の余裕もなく恐ろしい残忍さで虐殺されます。イギリスではどんな動物も、生まれて一年後には、幸福や余暇の意味を知らなくなります。ここではどんな動物も自由ではありません。動物の生活は惨めな奴隷の状態です。此れは明らかな真実です。（井上一馬訳）
