０５８　夢と知性   

 

I grieved to think how brief the dream of the human intellect had been.  It had committed suicide.  It had set  itself  steadfastly  towards  comfort  and ease, a balanced society with security and permanency as its watchword, it had attained its hopes――to come to this at last.  Once, life and property must have reached almost absolute safety.  The rich had been assured of his wealth and comfort, the toiler assured of his life and work.  No doubt in that perfect world there had been to unemployed problem, no social question left unsolved. And a great quiet had followed.

人類の知性が夢みるものは、なんとはかないことかと思うと、僕は悲しかった。人類は自殺してしまったのだ。人類は快適な安易な生活を求め、安定して永続的な調和のとれた社会という標語のもとに、たゆまず努力して、その目的を達した――それがこんな結果を招くとはね。一度は、生活も財産もほとんど安全に保障されるようになったにちがいない。金持ちは富と安楽とを、労働者は生活と労働をと保証されたにちがいない。むろん、その完璧な社会では失業問題もなく、未解決な社会問題もなかったであろう。そして社会には大きな平穏がもたらされた。（石川年訳）
